Public Relations Professionals, Media Person of the Year Honored at FPRA Image Awards

PENSACOLA, Fla. (April 24, 2018) – WEAR ABC 3 TV reporter Allie Norton was named Media Person of the Year, and area public relations programs and practitioners were honored at the 2018 Florida Public Relations Association Pensacola Chapter’s Grand Slam Image Awards luncheon held April 19 at the First United Methodist Church of Pensacola.

FPRA Pensacola Chapter has a long standing tradition of recognizing a local media professional as Media Person of the Year, an award that expresses appreciation for the vital relationships public relations professionals have with members of the media to bring news stories to light. It is based on nominations from chapter members. According to FPRA Pensacola President-elect Sarah Whitfield, the 2018 recipient, Allie Norton, was recognized for her “professional coverage of local headlines.”

The annual Image Awards competition serves to recognize the best in public relations. 

FPRA Image Awards for the Pensacola chapter were presented for programs, printed tools and online/audio/visual tools of public relations. Entries were judged on a written summary and work samples. 

The following were honored for public relations programs:

Naval Education and Training Command Professional Development Center (NETPDC) Public Affairs Officer (PAO) Ed Barker received the Grand All Image Award, an Image Award and a Judges’ Award for Navy College Shifts to Virtual Delivery.

Gulf Power received an Image Award for McCrary Battery Energy Storage Demonstration by Kimberly Blair, Brandi Gomez and Rick DelaHaya

Gulf Power received an Award of Distinction and a Judges’ Award for Social Media Coverage of Hurricane Nate by the Gulf Power Corporation Communication Team.

Escambia County School District Public Relations Coordinator Kim Stefansson received a Judges' Award for Workman Orchestra Rises Like A Phoenix.

The following were honored for printed tools of public relations:

NETPDC PAO Ed Barker received a Judges' Award for Navy College Program Mobile App. 

The following were honored for online/audio/visual tools of public relations:

Gulf Power received an Image Award for the Gulf Power Website by Steve Esser and Nick Seabrook.

Gulf Power received an Award of Distinction for the Gulf Power Symposium App by Steve Esser and Nick Seabrook.

Visit Pensacola received a Judges' Award for The Multicultural Pensacola Experience.

Sponsors for the Grand Slam Image Awards luncheon included Salz Studio and Eight Fifty Media.

FPRA Pensacola Awards Student Scholarships

The Pensacola chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA) has awarded three $500 scholarships to deserving public relations students from the University of West Florida.

Susanna Rogers, a senior at UWF and the student liaison to the FPRA Pensacola chapter, was awarded the Eileen M. Perrigo, APR scholarship. Rogers serves as an intern for Escambia County Commissioner Doug Underhill.

Christopher Bonanno, a junior at UWF, was awarded the Scott Harrington, APR, CPRC scholarship. He interns for the UWF Athletics Communications Department as well as for the Escambia County public relations officer.

Alyssa Lee, a senior at UWF, received the Lt. Col. John W. Dillin scholarship. In 2017, she completed an internship with NASA’s George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. 

Each student was selected from a pool of applicants who completed an application process and a brief essay. To be eligible for a scholarship, students must be a junior or senior majoring in public relations, a student member of FPRA, have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, and be in good standing within the Communications Department at UWF.

FPRA Pensacola Chapter honors Media Person of the Year and installs new board

The Pensacola Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association honored several outstanding individuals and installed the 2017-2018 board of directors at its August luncheon.

The 2017 Media Person of the Year was recognized as Lani Suchcicki, planning editor for the Pensacola News Journal. She was nominated by several peers within the community, being described as the “hero of the media world.”

Several FPRA Pensacola Chapter members were also honored with special awards. Brandi Gomez, Gulf Power, received the President’s Award, while Sarah Whitfield, Santa Rosa County, received the Member of the Year award.

In addition to the celebration, the new FPRA Pensacola Chapter board was installed.

The new officers include: president, Brandi Gomez; president-elect/VP membership, Sarah Whitfield; past president, Nicole Stacey, Visit Pensacola; treasurer, Megan Siefert, ProHealth; secretary, Mandy Fernandez, Baptist Health Care; vice president of programs, Josh Newby, Council on Aging of West Florida; vice president of networking, Mallory Wilson, Sacred Heart Foundation; vice president of Image Awards, Kim Stefansson, Escambia County School District; vice president of communications, Amy Minchin; vice president of accreditation, Sonya Daniel, APR, Escambia County Supervisor of Elections Office; at-large, Cam Johnson, Cox Communications.

2017-2018 Board of Directors Slate Has Been Announced

Area public relations programs and practitioners were honored at the 2017 Florida Public Relations Association Pensacola Chapter "Sparkle Like a Diamond" Local Image Awards on April 20 at the First United Methodist Church of Pensacola. The Image Awards competition serves to recognize the best in public relations. We also celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Pensacola chapter.

Apply for the 2016 FPRA Annual State Conference Scholarship

Pensacola Chapter: 2016 FPRA Annual State Conference Scholarship Application

The FPRA Pensacola Chapter is offering a scholarship to attend FPRA’s 78th Annual Conference, at Innisbrook Golf & Spa Resort, Aug. 7-10, 2016. The scholarship will be awarded to an FPRA Pensacola chapter member, whether they have attended previous annual conferences or not, who demonstrates a professional and financial need. Winners will be selected by the current Pensacola Chapter Board or past-presidents if a board member applies. Scholarship Eligibility:

  • Must be a current professional member in good standing with the Pensacola chapter.
  • Current and past Pensacola Chapter board members are eligible.
  • Previous Pensacola Chapter scholarship winners are not eligible.
  • Member must demonstrate a financial need for the scholarship.

The scholarship includes conference registration only, a $725 value. The recipient is responsible for transportation, hotel and other costs associated with the annual conference. A submitted application implies acceptance of these terms. Click here to download the application.

Welcome Grace Tennyson!

We would like to extend a warm welcome Grace Tennyson. Grace was selected as the 2015-2016 FPRA Pensacola Chapter Student Liaison. She will graduate from the University of West Florida with a communication arts degree, specializing in public relations, in April 2016.

As a student at the University of West Florida, Grace is active in several organizations: Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honors Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society, the American Marketing Association, and Kappa Delta Sorority. While attending the university, Tennyson worked as a Resident Assistant in the Department of Housing and Residence Life, and currently is employed as a Career Peer for the Department of Career Services. She has had the opportunity and enjoyment of serving on the Dean of University College Search Committee, the Undergraduate Student Staff Selection Committee, and as a Recruitment Counselor for the College Panhellenic Council.

Grace is from Irvine, California and enjoys spending time with her friends.
