Fenner will be speaking on intentional confusion in mass media, also known as “fake news.” Remember the tobacco industry in the 70s, which spent a lot of money on research on anything that could be a cause of lung cancer other than smoking. They published a popular science-type journal which was distributed to thousands of doctor's offices, political organizations, politicians, etc. around the country. The idea was that they didn't have to downplay the harmful aspects of smoking; they just had to create enough confusion so that the public would think that there were lots of competing causes. What can PR professionals do to minimize these problems? Can the tactics of agnotology ever be used for good?
Fenner is an experienced communicator who has led the UWF team to top finishes at regional and national tournaments. Participating in collegiate speech and debate provides students with the advanced critical thinking and communication skills necessary to succeed in the workplace. Before coming to UWF in 2014, he established a competitive speech team at Florida Southern College, where he coached students to 32 national titles.
